Learn how to get a beautiful watercolour effect using markers and a plastic bag! This is helpful if you are new to watercolours or don’t have any watercolours on hand. The end result looks great no matter what!

Materials

-clear plastic bag. Sandwich bags work great

-washable markers

-watercolour paper or a thick paper such as cardstock

-spray bottle

-paper towel or rag

-markers or pens for drawing

Instructions

1. Place your bag down on a flat surface. Tape it down if it helps keep it in place. Pick 3-4 coloured markers that are similar such as blue-green-purple or pink-red-orange. Choosing similar colours will prevent your colours getting muddy.

2. Draw patches of colour on the bag. It does not matter where you place the patches. Continue with the rest of your colours filling up most of the area on the bag.

3. Using a spray bottle that has a fine mist setting, spray the bag lightly. Make sure it is not too wet! Place your paper on top and use your hands to smooth down the entire paper evenly.

5. Lift your paper off carefully and let it dry flat completely.

6. When your paper is dry you can leave it as is or you can take a pen or marker and draw on top. These colours reminded me of the ocean so I drew an underwater scene!

This is a great way to can evenly blended colours with a watercolour look. You can use this technique to make cards, bookmarks and drawings. Experiment with different colours and patterns and have fun!
