Lunar New Year or Chinese New Year is on Tuesday February 1, 2022! It is the year of the tiger according to the Chinese zodiac. The tiger is known to be a symbol of strength, brave, unpredictable, and competitive.
Red is a lucky colour in China. Lanterns are said to bring good luck, light and peace. So in this tutorial we are going to make some festive lanterns!
Materials
-cardboard tube
-bright coloured paper in red, yellow, gold, etc.
-hot glue or glue stick
-scissors
-battery tea light (optional)
Instructions
1. Cut a bit off the cardboard tube to make it a bit shorter.
2. Colour the tube. You can paint it or wrap it in paper like I am doing here. I am cutting off enough paper to wrap around the tube and gluing it in place.
3. For the outer part of the lantern, cut out a piece of paper that is lightly wider and longer than the tube.
4. This is optional but I am drawing on tiger stripes for the year of the tiger!
5. Fold the paper in half along the long side. Make even cuts along the folded edge. Make sure to not cut up all the way and leave a bit of space.
6. Glue to two corners of the paper down to the tube. The middle should flare outwards.
7. Continue gluing the paper along the edge of the tube all the way around. Cut off any excess at the end.
8. Gently pull and tug the paper to smooth out any harsh folds and to make the lantern more round and volumized.
9. Glue on any finishing details like a handle and paper trim.
10. If you’d like to add a tea light, crumple up a bit of newspaper and glue it inside the cardboard. Then place your tea light on top. And you’re done!
